Dr Karolina Karpińska’s Plenary Lecture at ESU 10 in Aveiro

From 20 to 24 July 2026, the University of Aveiro in Portugal hosted the tenth edition of the European Summer University on History and Epistemology in Mathematics Education (ESU 10). Its programme covered, among other topics, the history of mathematics education, the use of the history of mathematics in classroom teaching and teacher education, and the historical and sociocultural aspects of the relationship between mathematics and science, technology, and the arts in the context of interdisciplinary education. The conference brought together participants from 30 countries across Europe, the Americas, Asia, and Africa.

During the conference, Dr Karolina Karpińska delivered a plenary lecture entitled “Mathematics Education in Secondary Schools for Boys in 19th-Century Poland: Schools with Polish, Prussian, Austrian, and Russian Curricula”. She showed how, under changing political conditions, curricula, textbooks, teachers’ scholarly publications, and school-leaving examinations helped shape the body of mathematical knowledge and skills that 19th-century schools in the Polish lands considered essential for a well-educated young man.
