(Polish) Women and the University of Tartu before 1945
Dr Janet Laidla, Lecturer of Estonian History at the Institute of History and Archaeology and Research Fellow at the Skytte Institute of Political Studies at the University of Tartu
Fair amount has been written on Polish students at the University of Tartu, but also at the Veterinary Institute of Tartu, especially in the 19th century. Much less is known of the women who gave midwife, assistant pharmacist, pharmacist and dentist exams. The presentation will provide an overview of women’s entry to the University of Tartu first receiving certificates, then becoming auditors and students and then finally as academic staff members. Many of the examples used to illustrate this process will be of Polish women to increase the awareness that although in much smaller numbers, they also have a connection to the University of Tartu.
