The teaching of Galois theory: Lessons from its first hundred years

22.01.2025 | 22.01.2025

This presentation examines four lectures on Galois theory that were held at the University of Göttingen during the first century of the existence of the theory, namely by Richard Dedekind (1856-58), Felix Klein (1886), Hermann Minkowski (1906) and Gustav Herglotz (1926). During this time, Galois theory underwent significant changes both mathematically in terms of its general perception and teaching. The existing lecture thus notes offer a unique insight into the dissemination of the theory from complete neglect to mathematical mainstream. At the same time, they are by no means representative for the teaching of Galois theory of their times, as their lecturers – all eminent mathematicians often ahead of their time – certainly had their very own approaches to the ever-changing theory.
