22.09.2023 | 22.09.2023

On 11–16 September 2023, the Institute for the History of Science of the Polish Academy of Sciences organized an international conference entitled Copernicus and Astronomy: Continuity, Reform, and Dissemination as part of the Toruń celebrations at the World Copernican Congress, commemorating the 550th anniversary of the birth of Nicolaus Copernicus.

The Congress, which concluded on 16th September in Toruń, was a collaborative effort involving the Jagiellonian University in Krakow, Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń, the University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn, and the Institute for the History of Science of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Warsaw. Throughout the entire year of celebrations (Toruń-Krakow-Olsztyn-Toruń), participants could engage in numerous debates, conferences, workshops, exhibitions, and accompanying events.

The conference on the history of astronomy offered an overview of current research on various aspects of pre-Copernican astronomy, Copernicus himself, and the early reception of new astronomy. The conference consisted of three modules: 1. Ptolemaic and Alfonsine heritage; 2. Copernican astronomy, and 3. Early reception.

Westman (University of California San Diego, USA). We have just concluded four days of discussions, featuring three thematic panels and 27 speakers from around the world.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to our hosts in Toruń for their excellent organization and warm hospitality, and to all participants for engaging in stimulating discussions. We look forward to future collaborative efforts to commemorate the legacy of Nicolaus Copernicus.
