Seminarium z historii matematyki, 6 listopada 2023

Zapraszamy do udziału w kolejnym seminarium z historii matematyki. Najbliższe spotkanie odbędzie się 6 listopada 2023 r. w sali 1016 Instytutu Matematyki UJ, Kraków, ul. Łojasiewicza 6; początek spotkania o godzinie 12:15.

Prof. Robin Wilson wygłosi odczyt pt. Four colours suffice. Po referacie przewidziana jest dyskusja. Spotkanie będzie miało formę hybrydową, a osoby zainteresowane uczestnictwem w nim za pomocą platformy Zoom proszone są  o kontakt z Danutą Ciesielską (smciesie@cyfronet.krakow.pl).

Prof. Robin Wilson – emerytowany profesor matematyki w Open University, geometrii w Gresham College w Londynie, były członek Keble College Oxford University oraz były prezes British Society for the History of Science, autor lub współautor ponad 50 książek, w tym dwutomowej monografii The History of Mathematics. A Source-based Approach.

Abstract:

In this talk I present the history and solution of the four-colour problem: Can every map be coloured with just four colours so that neighbouring countries are coloured differently?

The answer is ‘yes’, but the proof took 124 years to find, and used 1200 hours of computer time. But what did it involve, and is it really a proof?
